According to a FtLeavenworthLamp.com report, a forum sponsored by the National Football League (NFL) and the United States Army was held to tackle the serious topic of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The forum aimed to explore how to protect soldiers and players from the long-term affects of concussions and TBIs, with the NFL honoring its August agreement to initiate efforts to protect its professional athletes. During a panel discussion, Lt. General David Perkins stated that this significant health issue is “not an Army problem. It’s not a football problem. It really is a health problem across our nation.”

Nebraska NFL Traumatic Brain InjuryIn order to protect those who serve the U.S., the Department of Defense (DOD) issued an instruction in September requiring any military service member who may have been exposed to a “potentially concussive event” to be pulled off duty for at least 24 hours and given medical clearance before returning to duty. Any further exposures require a longer stay and more evaluation before reporting back.

Kansas City Chiefs President Mark Donovan asserts that a change in culture about the risks of concussions needs to start from the top levels in sports and the military, especially as a “warrior mentality” exists in both the Army and the NFL, which pushes players to “soldier on” in spite of injuries. The benefit of events, such as this forum, is that both organizations can learn from each other and share valuable information and training methods regarding how to protect against TBI.

Other joint efforts held by both organizations include the groups placing special sensors in the helmets of their members to detect possible concussions after a head trauma, as well as special tests and coordinated strategies to determine whether a concussion has occurred.

A traumatic brain injury is certainly one of the most devastating injuries a person can endure and can permanently impact the person’s life. As such, the NFL brain injury lawyers of Cullan & Cullan, LLC applaud the efforts of the Army and the NFL to protect its service members and players from this traumatic injury, but also understand that not all injuries can be prevented. If you are an NFL athlete and have endured a TBI, call our offices to discuss your situation and your legal options with a member of our legal team.
